Summer Institute in Human Ecology Education

July 8-19, 2019

The University of Manitoba is offering a Summer Institute in Human Ecology Education focusing on teaching textiles through the Faculty of Education. Two courses will be offered July 2019 in teaching textiles to both middle years and senior years students. These courses are available to education students as part of the undergraduate program and PBDE students as the courses are offered in both the 3000 and 5000 levels.

Emphasis will be placed on planning and implementing grade levelled courses in these areas that align with the new Manitoba Curriculum Framework of Outcomes.

Events of the Evening: Career Pathways Poster Unveiling, Curated Hat Review by the Costume Museum of Canada, Ringing Ceremony, Dessert (Cake made by Chocolate Zen Bakery).

Interested in Service Sewing?

Join other Human Ecology teachers for a morning of learning. We will meet with retirees from Manitoba Telecom Services (MTS) who work on a variety of charity and service sewing projects. Discover what they make, who they support and donate to, and where they get supplies from. Take some ideas from them back to your own classroom!

·Grade 5 and 6 GLO 3.1 Investigate opportunities to benefit your community through service learning projects (e.g. sewing for others)

·Grade 7 and 8 GLO 3.1 Investigate opportunities to benefit your community through service learning projects (e.g., sewing for others, collecting and repairing items, raising awareness, etc).

Grades 9-12 Textile Arts and Design: GLO 3.1 Investigate opportunities to benefit your community through service learning projects (e.g., sewing for those in need, collecting and repairing items, raising awareness, and raising funds for a community cause).

Join us at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 24 at 235 A Horace Street. (Corner of Horace and Traverse, just off Goulet). After our morning session we plan to meet for lunch in the neighbourhood to network and chat.
